In 1951, Casey Stengel believed that the kid from Commerce was easily going to replace the aging Joe DiMaggio. With the pressure of being the next Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig all rolled into one, Mickey Mantle was only able to become the most popular player of his generation. Not bad for a kid that was sent to the minors in his first season. Presented is the paramount postwar card in the industry. Even casual members of society have an idea of the grandeur and importance of the 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle. There may never be enough “quality” 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle cards to match demand - where bragging rights are more important than dollars. Few individuals are even willing to part with a relic that defines an industry as this card does. The presented exemplar sits askew, tilted ever so slightly from left to right. Corner and edge wear is moderate, in conjunction with the guidelines set by PSA and there are no creases. The blue background contrasts nicely with Mantle’s navy blue Yankees cap and his golden bat, but there are noticeable light surface abrasions. The reverse of the card is clean and presents quite nicely. This card is among the most recognized and coveted cardboard artifacts in the hobby and make no mistake this PSA 4 is worth much deliberation.
